HC Deb 14 May 1901 vol 94 c46
MR. WILLIAM REDMOND (Clare, E.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the Imperial Government will be able to exercise control on the question of Chinese labour in Rhodesia and the Transvaal; and if he can state what is the amount of poll-tax levied on Chinese in the various Australian colonies.

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

Any legislation passed in Rhodesia and the Transvaal will require the sanction of the High Commissioner and of the Administrator of the Transvaal, who is subject to the instructions of His Majesty's Government. A poll-tax of £10 is levied in New South Wales, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
