HC Deb 07 May 1901 vol 93 c929
MR. SWIFT MACNEILL (Donegal, S.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether General Colvile has demanded a trial by court-martial; and, if so, why has that demand been refused.

MR. BRODRICK

All the facts connected with General Colvile's case were discussed at length in debate in this House.‡ I have nothing whatever to add to the statements I then made.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

I must ask the right hon. Gentleman to reply to my question. Was a court-martial asked for and refused?

MR. BRODRICK

If the hon. Member had been in the House he would have heard what took place in a discussion for an hour. I am not prepared to take up the time of the House.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

The question was not answered. I have read the debate.

MR. BRODRICK

I made a full statement of the facts as they were told to me.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

Why was the demand refused?

*MR. SPEAKER

The right hon. Gentleman has already stated that he has nothing to add to his answer.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

Was it because the inquiry disclosed Lord Kitchener's incompetence?
