HC Deb 07 May 1901 vol 93 cc953-4
MR. WEIR

I beg to ask the Lord Advocate, as representing the Secretary for Scotland, having regard to the fact that the feuing scheme prepared by the Congested Districts Board for the creation of fishermen's holdings in or near Stornoway, Lewis, was of such a character that only one fisherman made application for a holding under the terms of the scheme, will he state whether any, and, if any, what, efforts have been made to arrange with the proprietor of Lewis for the acquisition of land on feu on such terms as will enable the Congested Districts Board to present to the fishermen a feuing scheme more favourable to them than that originally put forward; and, in view of the fact that the Lewis District Committee represent that the fishermen would be willing to secure holdings on reasonable terms, will the Board reopen negotiations with the proprietor on the subject, if that has not already been done.

*MR. A. GRAHAM MURRAY

The Congested Districts Board cannot accept the suggestion that the character of the scheme put forward by them was the cause of only one fisherman coming forward, but when they receive definite information from the District Committee as to those who desire such feus, they will be willing to reconsider the matter.

MR. WEIR

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the rental demanded is so high that the Board may have to wait till Doomsday for application?
