HC Deb 07 May 1901 vol 93 c962
MR. M'FADDEN

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he will give the number of Roman Catholic and the number of Protestant magistrates in the county of Antrim, and if he will advise the Lord Chancellor of Ireland to appoint such a number of Roman Catholic magistrates for the said county as will give Roman Catholics a fuller representation on the magisterial bench than at present.

THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. WYNDHAM, Dover)

The numbers are 32 and 180 respectively. Applications and recommendations for the Commission of the Peace are made to the lieutenant of the county, who transmits them, if he thinks them suitable, for the consideration of the Lord Chancellor.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in the late Administration the Lord Chancellor made appointments over the heads of the Lord Lieutenants?

MR. O'DOHERTY

And has not a magistrate been appointed in like manner in the county of Derry during the existence of the present Administration?

*MR. SPEAKER

Order, order! Hon. Members are not entitled to debate the question.
