HC Deb 06 May 1901 vol 93 c732
MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

I desire to offer a few remarks by way of personal explanation. I have received a letter from General Buller in reference to a question answered on Thursday last,† and in justice to the gallant officer I wish to communicate its contents to the House. In the question referred to I asked why the Irish Fusiliers were not mentioned in the desapatch describing the action at Pieters Hill in February, 1900, though they fought bravely and suffered severely. General Buller has now written to me explaining that it was due to a clerical error that the battalion of Irish Fusiliers was not mentioned, but the mistake was corrected in a subsequent issue of the Gazette. The context of the original despatch, however, left no doubt as to what was meant.
