HC Deb 06 May 1901 vol 93 c746
MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether Lord Ampthill, who has been appointed to the Governorship of Madras, has had any experience of Indian affairs, and what has been his official experience previous to his promotion.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Lord G. HAMILTON, Middlesex, Baling)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. As to the second part, I understand Lord Ampthill was engaged since 1895 in connection with colonial matters at the Colonial Office.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

Is not Lord Ampthill's promotion due to the fact that he was formerly private secretary to the Colonial Secretary?

LORD G. HAMILTON

No.
