HC Deb 20 June 1901 vol 95 cc899-900
MR. NORMAN

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will cause to be procured from His Majesty's representatives abroad figures snowing the annual cost of the diplomatic services and the consular services respectively of the United States, Germany, and France.

VISCOUNT CRANBORNE

The following are the total figures taken in the * See page 271. case of France and Germany from the Estimates for the year 1901–02, and in the case of the United States for the year 1900–01, but I am not able to distinguish with any accuracy between the diplomatic and consular expenditure, and no doubt the charges do not correspond exactly to their English equivalents, so that the figures may be misleading. France, 9,435,500 francs; Germany, 8,507,700 marks; United States, 1,897,638.76 dollars.
