HC Deb 23 July 1901 vol 97 cc1335-6
MR. WHITMORE (Chelsea)

I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works whether any definite decision has now been come to with regard to the carrying out of the designs of the late Mr. Brydon for the new Government offices in Parliament Street.

THE FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS (Mr. AKERS DOUGLAS, Kent, St. Augustine's)

It has been definitely decided that Mr. Brydon's building, all the plans for which are in my pos- session, shall be carried out by the officers of my Department; and the contracts will be entered into under the supervision of the principal architect and of Sir John Taylor.

* LORD BALCARRES (Lancashire, Chorley)

I beg to ask my right hon. friend what will be done with the balance of the £26,000 allotted for the architect's fees?

MR. AKERS DOUGLAS

I hope thereby to effect a considerable saving.
