HC Deb 25 February 1901 vol 89 c1033
MR. ALFRED DAVIES

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can state the amount of tribute paid by the people of Cyprus to the Turkish Government; and the mode by which it is raised; and whether he can by representation to the Turkish Government secure some relief from this tribute, which presses upon the industry of the residents of the island.

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

The Cyprus tribute was fixed on the average paid during the five years preceding the occupation at £92,799 l1s. 3d., and is paid out of general revenue. Having regard to the arrangements entered into with the Porte in 1878 it would be useless to make representations as suggested by the hon. Member.
