HC Deb 30 April 1901 vol 93 c260
MR. D. A. THOMAS

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can say approximately what proportions of the exports of coal consist of bituminous, semi-bituminous, and anthracite coal respectively, and how much of the steam coal is what is known as smokeless; and what proportions are for navigation, gas-making, locomotion, household, manufacturing, and smithy purposes respectively.

*SIR M. HICKS BEACH

I cannot give all the details asked for nor for the whole country. But of the total quantity of coal exported from Newcastle, North and South Shields, Blyth, Sunderland, Hartlepool, Cardiff, Swansea, and Newport, which was, in round numbers, in 1900, thirty-one and a half million tons, approximately twenty-two and a quarter million tons was steam coal, and six and a half million tons gas coal; the small balance would mainly be for household and smithy purposes.
