HC Deb 29 April 1901 vol 93 c74
MR. WILLIAM JOHNSTON (Belfast, S.)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether the Roman Catholic deputation to His Majesty King Edward on the 3rd May will be constituted of ecclesiastics in their Papal robes; and if it is intended that the prelates should walk thus through the public streets; and whether the proclamation, issued on the 15th July, 1852, under the advice of the Ministers, expressly referring to the 29th section of the Emancipation Act, which forbids such public manifestation, will be repeated, if necessary, by His Majesty's Government.

MR. O'DOHERTY (Donegal, N.)

Before the right hon. Gentleman answers the question, may I ask whether it is possible that His Majesty made this arrangement without first consulting the Member for South Belfast.

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

In answer to the hon. Gentleman I have no information as to the first paragraph in the question, and, as to the second, I think it was stated by the Solicitor General in July, 1899, that there was no intention of renewing the proclamation.

MR. CULLINAN (Tipperary, S.)

Will the right hon. Gentleman permit Mr. Johnston to beat his Orange drum on this occasion?
