HC Deb 29 April 1901 vol 93 cc44-5
SIR THOMAS ESMONDE (Wexford, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he has any information to the effect that the Roman Catholics of the Gilbert Islands are subject to persecution; and if he will have inquiry made into the matter, especially with regard to then case of the boy Joane, of Maiana.

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

Some complaints were received last year, and an inquiry was instituted, which showed that there was no foundation for the allegations. The Vicar Apostolic of the Gilbert Islands expressed his thanks to the High Commissioner, and stated that he was confident that everything would go well. I will, however, ask for a special report on the case named by the hon. Member.
