§ MR. FIELD (Dublin, St. Patrick)I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the profits arising from the State Railways in Now Zealand for last year amounted to £1,621,000 sterling; and whether the Government will consider the advisability of adopting a similar system in Ireland, with a view to reduce taxation and to increase transit facilities.
§ MR. WYNDHAMAt my right hon. friend's request, I will reply to this question. The net receipts of the Govern- 1444 ment railways in New Zealand for the year ended 31st March, 1900, amounted to £571,533. In answer to the second paragraph, I have nothing to add, at present, to the statement already made by me.
