HC Deb 25 May 1900 vol 83 c1301
MR. T. M. HEALY (Louth, K.)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury if he can say why no pond of ornamental water for boating and pleasure has been made in Phoenix Park as in Hyde Park and St. James's Park; and what did those in the London parks cost, and would the Treasury sanction a similar expenditure in the Phœsnix Park.

MR. HANBURY

The question does not appear ever to have been considered whether an ornamental pond for boating could be made in the park, and, if so, what the cost would be, but inquiry, and, if necessary, an estimate shall be made. I am afraid, however, that there must be difficulties in connection with any expenditure on such a scheme in the Phoenix Park so long as no power exists for making regulations for the keeping of order in the park. The pond in the People's Gardens, I am informed, becomes stagnant in summer, as there is a very small supply of water passing through it.
