HC Deb 17 May 1900 vol 83 cc414-5
MR. WOODS

I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board, in view of the fact that the urban district council at Walthamstow have requested the Local Government Board to extend the powers of the Local Government Act, 1894, Section 33, Sub-section 1, to that urban district council, that this request has been unanimously supported by a public meeting of the ratepayers of Walthamstow, and that the overseers also made a unanimous application for the transfer of these powers to the council, whether he will reconsider his decision and confer the powers referred to in the above-stated section.

MR. CHAPLIN

I understand that the urban district council desire that the Local Government Board should transfer to them all the powers and duties of overseers. The Board have transferred to the district council the power of appointing overseers and assistant overseers, but they are advised that their powers would not enable them to make the consequential provisions which would be necessary if a transfer was made to the district council of all the powers of overseers.
