HC Deb 17 May 1900 vol 83 cc390-1
SIR JAMES HASLETT (Belfast, K)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether steps have been or will be taken to inquire into the direct losses of merchants who shipped goods from Great Britain or Ireland to South Africa before the outbreak of the war, and which goods, owing to the war, were lost by reason of delay in delivery; and if a court of inquiry be set up where will it sit, and what steps will merchants be required to take in proof of claims.

* THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. BRODRICK,) Surrey, Guildford

There is no reason to suppose that any claims which could properly be made for losses of this nature could not be dealt with by the existing courts of law.
