MACLEAN (Cardiff)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India if the total amount of gold coin put into circulation in India has yet reached the sum of one million sterling, and if the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce has made representations as to the scarcity of both gold and silver coinage in India.
§ THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Lord G. HAMILTON, Middlesex, Ealing)The total amount of gold coin put into circulation in India on the 1st May was £667,649. It is stated in The Times of May 7th that the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce have made a representation to the Government of India on the subject of the coinage, but I have no official confirmation of that fact.
