FARQUHARSON (Aberdeenshire, W.)I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury, as representing the Postmaster General, whether 9d. per pound is charged by parcel post to those now serving in South Africa; and, if so, will he consider the matter with a view of reducing so heavy a tax on the senders, who are chiefly the relatives of those serving.
§ THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. HANBURY, Preston)Her Majesty's Government have not found it practicable to set up a special parcel post rate for parcels addressed to the troops now serving in South Africa, and the parcel postage to the South African Colonies is 9d. per lb. The hon. Member is doubtless aware that free conveyance from Southampton to destination is provided by the War Office for parcels addressed to the troops to the care of the Embarkation Officer and sent to him carriage paid as far as Southampton.
