HC Deb 03 May 1900 vol 82 c589
* MR. THORNTON (Clapham)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in the Lunacy Bill before Parliament, he will consider the desirability of making provision that all cases of lunatics dying in workhouses and institutions under the control of the guardians shall be reported to the coroner, as is done in all asylums and houses licensed for the reception of lunatics.

* SIR M. WHITE RIDLEY

I think that the suggestion of ray hon. friend is a desirable one; but I find that legislation is not necessary in order to carry it out. In some poor law institutions it is already the practice to notify the deaths of lunatics to the coroner, and the Local Government Board have the power and are, I understand, prepared to issue an order requiring that this should be done in all the institutions.
