HC Deb 01 May 1900 vol 82 cc428-9
MR. JOHN REDMOND (Waterford)

On behalf of the Member for Mid Cork I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland if he will explain why a meeting at Newmarket, co. Cork, was proclaimed when called together by the Member for the Division at his constituents' desire.

MR. G. W. BALFOUR

The meeting referred to was not called by the Member for the Division at his constituents' desire, but was convened by placard under the auspices of the United Irish League. It was proclaimed because the Government had reason to believe that it was intended to denounce and intimidate a particular individual who is in occupation of an evicted farm in the immediate neighbourhood.

MR. DILLON

By whom was the information sworn on which the meeting was proclaimed?

MR. G. W. BALFOUR

The district inspector.
