HC Deb 16 March 1900 vol 80 c1067
MR. STEVENSON (Suffolk, Eye)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, whether he is now able to report the result of the representations made to the Sublime Porte by Her Majesty's Ambassador at Constantinople respecting the claims of British Indian pilgrims who were robbed and wounded by Arab brigands on the highway between Jeddah and Mecca in the years 1895, 1896, 1897, and 1898.

*THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. BRODRICK,) Surrey, Guildford

The total claim of British Indian pilgrims for losses by robbery in the Hedjez during the years 1892–1898, appears to have been about £2,500, but an arrangement was arrived at between the Vali and the claimants by which half this sum was to be accepted, provided the matter was promptly settled. The settlement of the claims on this basis was reported by the Acting British Consul at Jeddah to Her Majesty's Ambassador at Constantinople on the 20th of September last.
