SOAMESI beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War whether the Government requirements for rifle ranges entail the provision of a piece of land 4,000 yards long by 500 yards wide; and, whether it is possible, by means of screens, to provide a perfectly safe range for the use of the Lee-Enfield rifle on a much smaller piece of land.

POWELL-WILLIAMSThe dimensions of a range depend entirely on the nature of the country, but on a level 916 site for a 1,000 yards range ground would be required in length 2,000 yards behind the butt, and in breadth 200 yards at the butt, and 500 yards at 1,000 yards in rear. Inquiries are at present being made in regard to the provision of safety ranges of smaller dimensions.
