HC Deb 12 March 1900 vol 80 c581
MR. GRETTON (Derbyshire, S.)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War if the Secretary of State will consider the advisability of restoring to sergeant-majors of the Militia their status as warrant officers, as the deprivation of rank recommended by a Departmental Committee some years ago has been found to cause dissatisfaction.

MR. J. POWELL-WILLIAMS (for Mr. WYNDHAM)

It was found to be inconvenient to have sergeant-majors of Militia battalions possibly senior to the sergeant-major of the regimental district. Consequently the grant of warrant rank was restricted to the latter. The same inconvenience would arise if warrant rank were now granted, and the Secretary of State does not see his way to giving it.
