HC Deb 29 June 1900 vol 85 cc84-5
MR. MACALEESE

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland if he will grant the Return respecting shebeens in certain towns in Ireland standing on to-day's Paper.

MR. G. W. BALFOUR

No objection will be raised to the issue of the Return provided the hon. Member will expunge from the form of notice the first portion, which asks for the number of suspected, shebeens in the five cities named. The Government could not consent to the publication of information purporting to be based merely on the suspicions entertained by the police. If, therefore, the hon. Member will place an amended form of notice on the Paper, modified as I have suggested, the Return will be granted.
