MACLEANI beg to ask the Secretary of State for India if he can say what is now the total strength of the British and native troops withdrawn from the Indian establishment for service elsewhere, including the troops under orders for China: and whether the Government of India is taking any steps to supply the places of these troops.

HAMILTONThe total strength of the British and native troops withdrawn from the Indian establishment for service elsewhere, including the troops under orders for China, is approximately 16,000. We hope that the British troops now serving in South Africa will shortly return to India, but so far no steps have been taken to replace the native troops serving abroad.
