§ LORD EDMOND FITZMAURICE (Wiltshire, Cricklade)I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if the attention of the Foreign Office has been drawn to the continued persecution of the Jewish population in Rou-mania, and the denial to them of civil and political rights; and if the Roumanian Government has been reminded that their conduct in these matters is contrary to the Treaty of Berlin.

BRODRICKReports have appeared in the European press that the emigration of Jews from Roumania which has recently taken place has been caused by the illtreatment of the Jews by the authorities, but according to the information received by Her Majesty's Government there are no good grounds for this statement. It is understood that the Jews in Roumania are not naturalised, but no complaints have reached Her Majesty's Government, and consequently no representations have been made by them to the Roumanian Government of the subject.
