HC Deb 20 July 1900 vol 86 c655
MR. STEADMAN (Tower Hamlets, Stepney)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury if he is aware that an assistant inspector of postmen at York who, although he has passed sixty years of age, has had his period of service extended another five years, is allowed to keep a shop with a beer off-licence; and whether this is in accordance with the rules of the Department.

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. HANBURY,) Preston

When the assistant inspector of postmen referred to attained the age of sixty in April, 1899, he was reported to be efficient in the discharge of his duties, and it was decided that he might remain for the present—not for any specified number of years. As he had been in possession of the off-licence for upwards of twenty years without the knowledge of the Department, it was not, in view of his early retirement, which will very shortly take place, considered necessary to require him to relinquish it.
