HC Deb 20 July 1900 vol 86 c660
MR. T. D. SULLIVAN (Donegal, W.)

I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether he will have arrangements made in the taking of the census in March, 1901, to obtain a Return of the number of persons in Ireland (being of three years of age or upwards) who speak English only or Irish only, or both Irish and English, in like manner as is required in the Census Bill with regard to the speaking of the Welsh language in Wales and the county of Monmouth.

THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. G. W. BALFOUR,) Leeds, Central

If the hon. Member will refer to the Returns of the last census in Ireland he will observe that they contained statistics of all persons who spoke Irish only, or Irish and English. Similar statistics will be collected and published in connection with the approaching census, in Ireland.
