HC Deb 17 July 1900 vol 86 c221
MR. HUMPHREYS-OWEN (Montgomeryshire)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether there are in any civil prison in the Cape Colony any, and, if any, how many persons detained by sentences of courts martial.

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

I have no information, I am sorry to say; but if the hon. Gentleman desires, I will communicate with Sir Alfred Milner. It will, however, take some time.

MR. HUMPHREYS-OWEN

I think it would be interesting to have the information.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

Why not communicate by telegraph?

MR. J. CHAMBERLAIN

Sir Alfred Milner is already subjected to tremendous strain, and I do not like to add to the pressure unnecessarily. I will communicate by despatch, however.
