HC Deb 13 July 1900 vol 85 c1452
SIR H. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN (Stirling Burghs)

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether he is obliged to confirm the terrible news we have received from China?

*MR. BRODRICK

No, Sir; we have no confirmation of the news. The telegraph is not working between Shanghai and Cheefoo. We are unable, therefore, to obtain any information at present. The land telegraph lines have been cut, and we are unable to hold any communication with our own naval officers at present.
