HC Deb 23 February 1900 vol 79 c925
CAPTAIN NORTON () Newington, W.

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, seeing that the labourers in Deptford Victualling Yard receive less than the current rate of wages in the locality, and seeing that they have been working for abnormally long hours at high pressure for some months past, he will consider the advisability of recognising their devotion to duty by granting them a slight increase in the rate of pay for overtime.

MR. GOSCHEN

The fact that the labourers in Deptford Victualling Yard have been working for abnormally long hours at high pressure for some months past has not escaped my attention, and for some time I have been considering the possibility of some recognition. I am now endeavouring to obtain an exact statement of the amount of overtime.
