HC Deb 16 February 1900 vol 79 cc222-3
MAJOR RASCH () Essex, S.E.

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War whether the War Office has reduced the physical standard of recruits; and what, is the minimum for infantry of the Line and artillery drivers.

MR. WYNDHAM

The standard of height has been reduced in the following cases:—Drivers in Horse and Field Artillery, from 5 ft. 4 in. to 5 ft. 2 in,; Infantry of the Line, from 5 ft. 3 in. to 5 ft. 3 in.; Army Service Corps, from 5 ft. 3 in. to 5 ft. 2½ in. No change whatever has been made in the chest measurements for any of the above arms, or in the medical examination, which has not been relaxed in any way.

MAJOR RASCH

Will the hon. Gentleman consider the propriety of increasing the pay instead of reducing the height?

[No answer was given.]
