BILL () Staffordshire, LeekI beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the Government proposes to make such alterations in the harbour of Famagusta as will make it more convenient for trade purposes; and whether due care will be taken in the process of carrying out such alterations that no damage shall be done to, and that there shall be no interference with, the ancient walls and gates of the town.
§ MR. J. CHAMBERLAINThe improvement of the harbour at Famagusta will be taken in hand as soon as the necessary preliminary legislation has been passed by the Legislative Council. Every care will be taken to avoid any undue interference with the ancient walls and gates. I am in communication with the High Commissioner on this point.
