HC Deb 13 February 1900 vol 78 c1359
CAPTAIN NORTON (Newington, W.)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War if he can say whether there is any truth in the statement that no party of Royal Engineers was detailed in the first instance to accompany the battalions attacking Spion Kop, and that no such party was sent forward until it was too late and the troops were in retreat; and whether as a consequence of this neglect the entrenchments were laid out in a direction which rendered the men occupying them liable to a severe reverse fire.
