HC Deb 02 February 1900 vol 78 c445
MR. LLOYD MORGAN

On behalf of the hon. Member for the Gainsborough Division of Lincolnshire, I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India, whether, in view of the recent experience in Natal and Cape Colony proving the practical invulnerability of a well fortified range of mountains to an invading force whose base is at a great distance, the large payment to Afghanistan will be suspended and the whole or part of the money spent on strengthening the forts and increasing the armaments on the frontier.

LORD G. HAMILTON

The terms of the agreement, dated the 12th of November, 1893, would not justify any such diversion of the subsidy as the hon. Gentleman suggests.
