COLONEL WELBYI beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether he can see his way to publish a Return of the number of horses purchased for the South African campaign, showing the countries where they were bought, the average price paid, and the number that died in transport to the Cape; also a Return showing the number of horses belonging to the forces in South Africa at different times during the war, and the death casualties that occurred amongst them.
