I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India if ho can state how long the office of Commander-in-Chief in India has been vacant, and when an appointment is to be made.

Sir William Lockhart died on the 19th of March last. Since then Sir Power Palmer has been acting as Commander-in-Chief. I hope to make a permanent appointment shortly, but I am at present unable to fix any date.
