HC Deb 07 December 1900 vol 88 c210
MR. DALZIEL

Sir, I rise to ask your permission and the indulgence of the House to make a brief personal explanation. It will be within the recollection of the House that during the debate last night the remark was made by some hon. Member to the effect that the right hon. Gentleman the Colonial Secretary was speaking the truth for the first time. I notice this morning that, in many leading newspapers, I am credited with that remark, and I further understand that several hon. Members of the House are of the opinion that I made it. [Ministerial cries of "No."] Many hon. Members have expressed that opinion to me. I only rise to say that I did not make the remark. I accept no responsibility whatever for it, and I therefore think it is due to the right hon. Gentleman and the House, and above all to myself, that I should entirety dissociate myself from it.
