HC Deb 07 August 1900 vol 87 cc907-8
General LAURIE (Pembroke and Haverfordwest)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War whether, as the despatches from the generals commanding in the field in South Africa, which the Government consider it is inexpedient to publish, should in accordance with precedent contain the names of officers and men brought to notice for heroism and gallantry in action, and, as delay in making such notice public materially weakens this as a reward for such service, it would be possible as a recognition to those still serving, and as a gratification to the relatives of those who have fallen, that extracts from these despatches could at once be published giving the names of those thus distinguished as well as the particulars of the services rendered. † See page 634, of this volume.

*MR. WYNDHAM

It would not be easy to separate the passages in which officers' names are mentioned from the context, but we have every hope that it may be found possible to publish the, despatches before long.
