HC Deb 19 May 1899 vol 71 cc1032-3
MR. MACALEESE

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether it is a fact that many small pension holders from the Royal Irish Constabulary would be anxious to commute their pensions and if so, will opportunity be offered them to commute on fair and reasonable terms.

MR. G. W. BALFOUR

The Inspector General does occasionally receive inquiries from constabulary pensioners as to whether they can commute their pensions but I understand there is no legal power to do so. I doubt whether, in the in terest of the men themselves, the right to commute should be given to them.
