HC Deb 08 May 1899 vol 71 c35
MR. COGHILL (Stoke-upon-Trent)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the injury that has been done to our trade by the present United States tariff, the Foreign Office will enter into specific commercial negotiations with the Government of the United States with a view to obtain either some modifications in the tariff, or to propose retaliatory measures.

* THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. ST. JOHN BRODRICK,) Surrey, Guildford

Any opportunity which may occur to make more favourable arrangements as regards Tariffs with the United States will be taken advantage of, but I cannot promise any immediate action.
