HC Deb 20 March 1899 vol 68 c1328
MR. MALCOLM

I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works whether he can now state when and where the plans of the new public offices will be exhibited for the inspection of Members; and whether the Government have given consideration to the suggestion which was urged upon them last year that the remainder of the Great George Street site should be acquired?

THE FIRST COMMISSIONER OF-WORKS (Mr. AKERS DOUGLAS,) Kent, St. Augustine's

The designs for the new public offices will be placed for the inspection of honourable Members in the Tea Room to-morrow. The plans as prepared for the new buildings on the Great George Street site show them extending back to the Park, and these plans will be laid in their entirety before the House, the portion which cannot at present be proceeded with being distinctly coloured. Having regard to the heavy extra outlay which the extension of the scheme would involve, the Government have not felt themselves to be in a position to apply for the additional funds, and they propose, therefore, to carry out only so much of the building as will cover the site now acquired.
