HC Deb 20 March 1899 vol 68 c1311
MR. YERBURGH (Chester)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can state what the exact nature and extent of the Italian demands are with regard to the province of Chekeang; and whether, seeing that the islands of Chusan are part of the province of Chekeang, they are included in such demands?

MR. BRODRICK

We have not had the text of the Italian demands, but we understand they do not include the Islands of Chusan, which are the subject of Treaty engagements between England and China, and are limited to the Eastern slope of the province towards the sea, which in no way comes within the Yangtze Basin.
