HC Deb 20 March 1899 vol 68 c1311
MR. MONK (Gloucester)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any portion of the claims of British subjects at Constantinople for losses sustained by them during the massacres of August 1896, has been paid by the Turkish Government; if not, whether the Porte still denies its liability to pay those claims; and whether Her Majesty's Government are prepared to take steps to obtain a settlement of them?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (Mr. ST. JOHN BRODRICK,) Surrey, Guildford

The Turkish Government have not as yet paid any portion of the British claims, and have continued to deny their liability to pay them. As regards the second paragraph of the Question, I can add nothing to the answer given by me on the 17th instant to a similar Question.
