HC Deb 16 March 1899 vol 68 c969
MR. THORBURN (Peebles and Selkirk)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury if he can explain why policies of insurance in connection with the Workmen's Compensation Act require to have a 6d. stamp, while policies in connection with the Employers' Liability Act have hitherto only required a 1d. stamp; and if he can see his way to reduce the stamp for insurance policies in connection with the Workmen's Compensation Act to a penny?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

The law requires that policies of insurance by employers against their liability under the Workmen's Compensation Act shall bear a 6d. stamp. It seems to me a very moderate charge as compared with the stamp duties on some other kinds of insurance, but proposals have been made to me for the change suggested by the honourable Member, and the matter will be examined.
