HC Deb 16 March 1899 vol 68 cc970-1
MR. FFRENCH (Wexford, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he can grant a Return showing the amount of sales that have taken place in the Land Judges Court in Dublin, under the 40th Section of the Land Act of 1896, also showing the number of cases in which the proceedings have proved inoperative and the sales abortive owing to the fact that the Land Judge and the Land Commission and the tenants have not agreed upon the terms of purchase, also a list showing the number of estates remaining in the Land Judges Court to which the 40th Section will probably be applicable, with the dates that these estates were put into the Land Courts respectively?

*MR. GERALD BALFOUR

On the 10th February, in replying to a Question of the honourable Member for Cork, I gave certain detailed information as to the extent of the operations already carried out under Section 40 of the Act of 1896, and I would ask the honourable Member to refer to my reply to that question. It would obviously be impossible to give a list of the cases of estates to which the 40th Section may hereafter be applied, as the Land Judge cannot say in anticipation what decision he may arrive at in a particular case.
