HC Deb 13 March 1899 vol 68 c529
MR. YOUNG (Cavan, East)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether instructions can be given to the police authorities at Belfast to place a sufficient number of policemen in plain clothes each Sunday in St. Clement's Church, with directions to arrest and prosecute anyone attempting to interfere with the service?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

The proposal to place policemen in plain clothes in the church for the purpose of identifying and proceeding against persons making the disturbance has already been considered by the Government, who, however, are of opinion that disturbers of the services should be brought into a court of law by the churchwardens rather than by the police. The police are prepared to assist the church wardens to prevent persons entering the church, if the churchwardens are empowered by the bishop or the rector to exercise this authority.
