HC Deb 13 March 1899 vol 68 cc529-30
MR. A. MOORE (Londonderry)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Agriculture what knowledge, if any, the Board of Agriculture has of the registration of margarine factories; whether the local authorities are the bodies charged with the duty of registering margarine factories: and whether they are bound to communicate the names of factories so registered to any department of Government: and, if not, whether he will provide for this contingency in the Bill at present before Parliament for the Sale of Food and Drugs?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF AGRICULTURE (Mr. W. H. LONG,) Liverpool, West Derby

As my honourable Friend is aware, section 9 of the Margarine Act provides for the registration of margarine manufactories with the local authority, and sub-section (4) of clause 7 of the Sale of Food and Drugs Bill requires the local authority to notify such registration to the Board of Agriculture. We shall therefore, I think, have no difficulty in obtaining the information we require for the exercise of the powers proposed to be conferred upon us by the clause in question.

CAPTAIN DONELAX (Cork, E.)

Are these margarine factories open to periodical inspection?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF AGRICULTURE

That I cannot say.
