HC Deb 13 March 1899 vol 68 cc527-8
MR. PIRIE

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War if he will state what marching tours of battalions and detachments through their territorial districts for recruiting purposes took place during 1898 beyond the live instances in the Annual Report of the Inspector-General of Recruiting of that year; the number of recruits enlisted whilst the march was taking place, and during the four weeks immediately succeeding its termination in each of the experiments mentioned in the Report; and also the number of miles and time occupied by each march, and the additional expenditure entailed in each instance?

MR. WYNDHAM

There were no marches for recruiting purposes other than the five referred to in the Annual Report of the Inspector-General of Recruiting. The detailed information for which the honourable Member asked is too lengthy to read to the House, but I shall be glad to supply him with it privately.

MR. PIRIE

How is it the Inspector-General of Recruiting in his Report mentions these five cases "among others" which took place if there were no others?

MR. WYNDHAM

I am informed no others took place.
