I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for War if he could state to the House what was the total expenditure on the provision of barrack accommodation, excluding maintenance, in England, Scotland, and Ireland respectively during the years 1887–97, and what were the sums allowed each country for last year and for this year respectively?

The sums are as follows:—Total expenditure from 1887–8 to 1896–7 inclusive: England, £3,182,495; Scotland, £73,399; Ireland, £903,372. The sums expended in 1897–98 were:—England, £231,789; Scotland, £11,893; Ireland, £136,131. The sums provided for 1898–99 were:—England, £330,851; Scotland, £23,262: Ireland, £148,498.
